From the Northern Korean Peninsula to Climate Action

Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) continues to engage in dialogue as well as in research on biodiversity and ecological collaboration. As part of these activities, two recent publications demonstrate how HSS Korea integrates environmental research, regional cooperation, and sustainable development.

The Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) Korea continues to promote dialogue and research on biodiversity conservation, ecological cooperation, and sustainable responses to the climate crisis. Its recent activities include contributing to a special issue on biodiversity on the Korean Peninsula and collaborating with an academic partner on a new publication exploring ecological and societal transformation.

To mark its 30th anniversary, the magazine “Small Is Beautiful” published Issue No. 288 under the theme “A Biodiverse Society.” The issue features an article titled “Biodiversity in the Northern Korean Peninsula,” which draws attention to the rich yet relatively underexplored ecosystems of the northern Korean Peninsula. It also considers how the peninsula’s shared natural environment could provide a foundation for dialogue and future inter-Korean cooperation. The article was written by Dr. Hyun-Ah Choi, Senior Researcher at HSF Korea, whose work focuses on biodiversity conservation, ecological cooperation, and environmental issues on the Korean Peninsula. Special thanks go to Dr. Nial Moores of Birds Korea for sharing photographs from the northern Korean Peninsula.

HSF Korea has also continued its cooperation with the OJEong Resilience Institute (OJERI) at Korea University, one of its partner institutions. As part of this collaboration, Dr. Choi co-authored Ecosystem Material Cycles and Societal Transformation in the Era of the Climate Crisis with OJERI researchers Dr. Hun Park, Dr. Cholho Song, and Professor Woo-Kyun Lee.

Bringing together ecological and social perspectives, the book examines the relationship between the climate crisis and disruptions to natural material cycles. It also explores how economic and social systems can be transformed to better align with ecological principles and support a more sustainable future.
