Conference
Transboundary Cooperation for Sustainable Ocean and Coastal Areas
The conference was divided into two presentation sessions, titled “Implications and Lessons from Northern Ireland and Ireland” and “Initiatives and Practices for Sustainable Coastal and Oceans of the Korean Peninsula”, followed by a discussion session.
Among the speakers were Dr Bernhard Seliger from the Hanns Seidel Foundation Korea who held a presentation about migratory birds and their habitat protection in DPRK and Ms Mi-Jin Lee from the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific (UNESCAP) reporting about the work of the North-East Asian Marine Protected Areas Network (NEAMPAN). Furthermore, Dr Seung-Oh Suh from the Ramsar Regional Center East Asia talked about Ramsar sites in the Korean Peninsula and two speakers from Queen’s University Belfast shared their experiences on similar topics on the Island of Ireland.
Hanns Seidel Foundation Korea works for peace and transboundary cooperation on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia, with a focus on “green détente” and environmental cooperation, for example within the Northeast Asian Subregional Environmental Cooperation (NEASPEC) project of UN-ESCAP, with the Ramsar Regional Center East Asia and other partners. Korea Maritime Institute is a long-term partner for projects on North-South cooperation in the maritime and fisheries sector.
