Agricultural Cooperation
Roundtable on agricultural cooperation on the Korean Peninsula
Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) Korea co-organised a roundtable with partners on 13 May 2026 to share research findings on the Korean Peninsula and discuss recent policy directions in North Korea related to agriculture, rural development, construction, and the environment. The event also explored potential areas for future cooperation among relevant institutions.
Opening remarks were delivered by Mr. Felix J. Glenk, representative of HSF Korea, who welcomed participants and emphasized the importance of continued dialogue and collaboration on issues related to regional cooperation.
The roundtable featured presentations and discussions on a wide range of topics, including changes in North Korea’s agricultural policy, regional development strategies, construction and tourism development, rural structural transformation, and environmental policy trends. Speakers noted North Korea’s growing focus on agricultural modernization, regional self-reliance, tourism-driven economic development, and environmental management.
The event also provided an opportunity for meaningful exchange among researchers, policymakers, and practitioners, thereby strengthening networks and deepening understanding of North Korea’s current situation. Participants discussed climate-related challenges and explored potential areas of cooperation aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goals 13 (Climate Action) and 15 (Life on Land).
Prior to the roundtable, participants visited the Environmental Testing & Analysis Centre of the Rural Research Institute. The centre conducts comprehensive analyses related to agricultural water and soil safety, including water quality monitoring, soil contamination assessments, and testing for heavy metals and hazardous substances. It also supports rapid responses to environmental pollution incidents and contributes to sustainable agriculture and climate adaptation through long-term environmental data collection and management.
