KCPC-HSF-EURAXESS Korea Expert Roundtabe
Round Table on Global Security and their Impact on the Korean Peninsula
The roundtable on may 11th 2026 brought together experts and participants to discuss South Korea’s security environment in a time of growing global instability. The exchange focused on how international conflicts, shifting power relations, and changing alliance dynamics are affecting the Korean Peninsula and South Korea’s strategic choices.
A key theme of the discussion was the increasing connection between regional and global security challenges. Participants reflected on how developments in other parts of the world can influence Northeast Asia, including North Korea’s strategic calculations, military partnerships, and approach to deterrence. The conversation highlighted that South Korea must assess its security not only through the lens of inter-Korean relations, but also within a broader international context.
The discussion also addressed the future of South Korea’s policy toward North Korea. Participants considered the difficulties of engagement under current conditions, as well as the changing meaning of dialogue, deterrence, and reunification in South Korean society. Particular attention was given to how political, generational, and strategic shifts may shape future approaches to the Korean Peninsula.
Another important focus was the role of alliances. The roundtable examined how South Korea, the United States, Europe, and other partners are adapting to a less predictable international order. Questions of burden-sharing, defense responsibility, and strategic autonomy were discussed as part of a broader debate on how allies can remain closely coordinated while also strengthening their own capacities.
The roundtable concluded with a broader reflection on the future of the international order. Participants discussed whether existing norms and institutions are being challenged, weakened, or transformed, and what this means for middle powers such as South Korea. Overall, the event offered a wide-ranging assessment of how South Korea can navigate a more fragmented global environment while strengthening its role as a responsible and capable regional actor.
