Online Seminar
Sustainable Agriculture and Livestock
The focus was on preventing an outbreak of African swine fever and measures for restoring a breeding farm after an outbreak. Animal diseases such as African swine fever continue to threaten the welfare of humans and animals. To prevent the spread of such diseases, it is crucial to rehabilitate livestock after an outbreak and implement comprehensive biosecurity measures to protect animal health.
On the first day of the seminar, two European case studies were used to discuss the causes of the spread of the disease and the diagnostic options. The focus was on virus transmission between wild and breeding pigs. Mr. Staack explained which logistical measures can be taken in animal husbandry to prevent further spread of the virus. He particularly emphasized the importance of hygiene during animal transport and in animal husbandry as well as the modern logistical design of pig farms.
The second day followed on from the previous day's topics. Mr. Staack presented successful measures to combat African swine fever, based on examples from European countries. A key topic was the necessary biosecurity measures that must be taken on farms following an outbreak, including proper carcass disposal and safe feed production. This is based on the strict laws and regulations at EU, federal (Germany) and state level as well as the importance of international cooperation.
