Change of perspective: Hanns-Seidel-Foundation employees abroad report
„Global expectations and worries: Perspectives from Northeast Asia on Trump´s return to the White House”
On January 20, 2025, Donald Trump was sworn in as 47th President of the United States of America. Currently, a new dynamic of relations between the USA and the rest of the world is unfolding – already now creating tension and challenges. Some speak even of a turning point in international diplomacy.
The media reactions of the world were very different. Therefore, on February 27, Hanns-Seidel-Foundation Institute of International Relations brought together representatives of Hanns-Seidel-Foundation from China (Beijing and Zhejiang), Korea and Mongolia to discuss the impact of the American elections on their respective countries of residence. Debora Tydecks-Zhou and Dominik Sprenger (HSS China), Dr. Bernhard Seliger (HSS Korea) and Felix Glenk (HSS Mongolia) discussed, how elections impacted their respective countries, followed by a discussion with the large and interested audience. In Korea, there are hopes for renewed diplomacy with North Korea, but also worries about the resolute diplomatic style of the US president and demands for a higher own contribution to defense of the country as well as because of potentially higher tariffs on Korean goods, which are a problem for the trading power South Korea.
