Symposium
The U.S. Presidential Election and Foreign Policy Implications

On October 8, 2024, the Hanns Seidel Foundation, together with the KCPC (Korea Council for Peace and Cooperation) and EURAXESS, hosted a symposium on “The U.S. Presidential Election and Foreign Policy Implications for Korea and East Asia”. The symposium brought together experts and organizations to share their knowledge.

Daniel A. Pinkston (KCPC) gave the first of two presentations of the evening. In his presentation, he analyzed the foreign policy implications of a potential Harris presidency for Korea and East Asia. Pinkston first examined the issues in international relations before moving on to the current geopolitical dynamics and then answering the questions of how and why the US election will matter to Korea and East Asia and how to move forward. Summarizing, he said that despite the significant structural/systemic obstacles, a Harris administration would likely strengthen and promote the liberal international order.

The second presentation was given by Dr. Roland B. Wilson and focused on the other presidential candidate, Donald Trump, and the implications of his foreign policy on Korea and East Asia should he win the election. He explained that both regions have unlimited potential for peace, prosperity, economic development, and leadership in the world; but that they also face profound problems such as historical mistrust, energy and food security, climate change, and natural and man-made disasters. According to Dr. Wilson, a second Trump presidency would reflect his views, and some believe a potential second term would be assertive, hostile and unrestricted, while others say he can bring stability and peace, end the war in Ukraine and force Iran to relent. China is Trump's central issue, particularly because of the country's economic, military and geopolitical influence. The Indo-Pacific strategy would likely continue by strengthening ties with Japan, Korea, India and Australia, and in addition, Trump would continue to engage with North Korea and seek high-profile summits and negotiations.

Following the input from the two presentations, the symposium participants engaged in a lively discussion about both sides and possible foreign policy implications, depending on the election results.
