Roundtable on Czech-Korean relations
The current situation on the Korean Peninsula and Czech-Korean relations
The current situation on the Korean Peninsula and Czech-Korean relations
On January 31st, in the office of Hanns-Seidel-Foundation in the Czech Republic, a small, but very intensive discussion took place with partners of Hanns-Seidel-Foundation and interested experts on the relations of the Czech Republic with North and South Korea and the current situation on the Korean Peninsula. In the past Czechoslovakia was one of the first states to foster diplomatic relations with North Korea in 1948 and later became a member of the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission of the armistice after the Korean War. After 1993, when the Czech Republic emerged, it became a close trading and investment partner, a tourism location and political ally of South Korea. Hyundai and other Korean companies invested in the Czech Republic and every year hundred thousands of Koreans visit Prague and other places in the Czech Republic. Currently, a South Korean power provider is the preferred bidder for two new nuclear power plants to be built in Dukonavy. Prof. Dr. Bernhard Seliger, representative of Hanns-Seidel-Foundation in Korea, together with Markus Ehm, head of the Hanns-Seidel-Foundation in the Visegrad countries (Czech Republic, Slovac Republic, Poland and Hungary) led through an evening of intense discussions. Thank you very much for your hospitality in Prague, this beautiful Central European city!
