Excursion to Yeoncheon
Hanns Seidel Foundation Korea Visits the Yeoncheon Paleolithic Festival

During its visit to the Yeoncheon Paleolithic Festival, Hanns Seidel Foundation Korea explored regional cultural initiatives, prehistoric heritage and opportunities for international exchange.

Hanns Seidel Foundation Korea visited the 33rd Yeoncheon Paleolithic Festival in Jeongok-ri, Yeoncheon on the 4th of May 2026. Held every May, the festival is one of Korea’s leading prehistoric cultural festivals, combining education, culture and hands-on experiences for visitors of all ages.

During the visit, the HSF Korea team gained valuable insights into the festival programme, including interactive activities related to Paleolithic life, traditional crafts, archery, family programmes and the well-known Paleolithic barbecue.

The international character of the festival was particularly impressive, with experts and institutions from various countries presenting prehistoric culture in an engaging and accessible way.

A special part of the visit was the meeting with representatives of the district office. Over a shared lunch, the participants had the opportunity to exchange views on regional cultural work, international cooperation and the importance of historical education.

Afterwards, the delegation visited the museum in Jeongok-ri. There, they were able to see, among other exhibits, the famous hand axe, which is closely connected to the archaeological significance of the site. The museum visit highlighted Yeoncheon’s important role in the study of the Paleolithic period in Korea.

The visit offered Hanns Seidel Foundation Korea a valuable opportunity to learn more about Yeoncheon’s cultural heritage, deepen existing contacts and gain new inspiration for German-Korean exchange in the fields of culture and education.
