Learning from Experiences – The Case of Ireland

The newly published book "The Process of Overcoming Division - Search for The Integrated Education in Northern Ireland" by one of the main partners of Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) in Korea, the Institute for Peace Affairs, deals with the idea of adjusting the South Korean educational system. The Northern Irish system could be used as a model in which unification is an important issue. Dr. Bernhard Seliger, Resident Representative of HSF Korea, wrote a welcome remark for the book. It is only available in Korean.

Three chapters deal with the idea of adapting the South Korean educational system to make the concept of unification more present for younger generations. The Northern Irish education system could serve as a model. The first chapter deals with problems in the current system in South Korea, such as the lack of objective considerations regarding unification. As a result, there is a lack of understanding and thematic connection among younger generations.

An adaptation of the South Korean education system, which uses the Northern Irish education system as a model, is the main message second chapter. The issue of a possible unification of Ireland is part of the Northern Irish education system. This mentality should also be introduced in South Korean schools. In the third chapter it is said that it is important to encourage pupils and students to deal with the division of Korea in order to get to know the other side. Thus, a commended opinion could be prevented.
