Dr. Moores first goes into how it came to the surveys and briefly outlines the previous projects of the North Korean government. He then reports on the new findings about the avifauna in Rason gained by the surveys. Compared to the 256 recorded species, 228 species were found in the four bird observations. 12 of the species found are threatened worldwide, 15 species breed for the first time nationally in North Korea or for the first time after several decades.

In the following, the author describes the different types of main habitats of individual bird species. Detailed records of 27 specially selected species of birds follow. Dr. Moores concludes that the region has potential for conservation and ecotourism. Challenges are the difficult political situation and the predicted population growth as well as the proximity to the fast-growing Chinese city of Yanbian. However, some of the problems could be remedied by international support. Dr. Moores sees considerable potential in Rason as a hotspot for ecotourism and travel to North Korea.
