5th International Forestry Seminar - Sharing experiences on Forestry in Mongolia

Since September 2014, the Hanns Seidel Foundation is implementing a project on sustainable reforestation, funded by the European Union. In September 2017, the 5th International Seminar in Pyongyang took place – it was the final practical activity that took place before the end of the project.

The workshop with the title “Forestry Experiences in Mongolia” was attended by more than 70 representatives of the North Korean forestry sector. Two Mongolian forestry experts shared their knowledge on a variety of topics, such as Tree Nursery Management, Forest Pest Control, the National Forest Inventory, including legislation, planning and implementation. The speakers shared the respective knowledge of their experiences working in the Mongolian forestry sector.

It was not the first time that a close cooperation and exchange between foresters from North Korea and Mongolia was established. The overall project included two study tours and one long-term training for foresters from North Korea in Mongolia. Furthermore, for the 3rd International Seminar in July 2016, a forestry expert from the German “Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit” in Mongolia served as advisor and lecturer. In times of deep tensions in the region, there are not many opportunities and platforms for international exchange. While global challenges, such as climate change or the conservation of transboundary ecosystems must be targeted by global cooperation, some exchange in the region still continues and some communication channels still remain open.

The workshop was complemented by a field visit to the training facility of the EU-funded project and the model site on sustainable reforestation in Sangseo-ri, Taedong-gun. The experts were introduced and gave advice on the implementation of the project.
